Composer's Forward
In writing these studies, I have endeavored to show to advantage the sonic qualities of the viola d'amore, and to draw attention to numerous aspects of the technique of this instrument, as the pedagogical literature in this area is very scarce, and on the whole, inadequate for developing a modern viola d'amore technique. I have used the traditional tunings of D major and d minor, since a major portion of the literature has been written in these tunings. I believe this should help to provide a solid basis in the characteristic finger patterns of the viola d'amore, which differ so greatly from those employed on instruments tuned in perfect fifths. These studies are appropriate for instrumentalists who have acquired a thorough technique through the study of the viola or the violin, and who are conversant with the basic fingering and bowing technique of the viola d'amore.

Some years ago, in my quest for new "old" music, I chanced upon three Italian dances from the 14th and 16th centuries. Here was music of incredible eloquence and beauty that could evoke a plethora of colors. I found these dances to be wonderful pieces with which to explore the indigenous properties and potential of the viola.
It has long been my desire to share these unique pieces with friends, colleagues, students - and all violists.
